Welcome to "Willkommen in Gransee"

The initiative "Willkommen in Gransee" started its work in January 2014 in order to structure the support work from the population of Gransee for the refugees coming to Gransee in the future. With the arrival of the first refugees our initiative was able to give basic support in language matters and daily practical activities.  Through showings of films and theatre performances and an informative seminar we were able to increase the awareness and knowledge of the situation of the refugees. In the meantime the main refugee facility has been opened for about 80 people and refugees from many countries have moved in. In addition, the city of Gransee has offered to the initiative a special house for use for their activities.

Stories of escape and asylumseekers in Strittmatter-Gymnasium, Gransee

On December 2nd 2014 the „Berliner Bühne für Menschenrechte“ gave a guest performance of „Asylmonologe“ (Monologues of asylum seekers) in the Strittmatter-Gymnasium in Gransee following an invitation of the Initiative Willkommen in Gransee. In the documentary theatre production of „Asylmonologe“ actors and actresses presented on stage interview passages of refugees with the intention of giving the students an opportunity to become aware of what „escape and political asylum“ means in a context that school normally cannot provide.

About 30 students who were particularly interested in this topic also had the opportunity to ask questions after the impressive performance. The refugee activist, Asif Syed, was there to talk with them and answer questions and was able to give impressions that would normally be missing in normal school teaching: the overwhelming personal stories, the many misfortunes that he experienced in the search for refuge, but also the small successes in his fight against an inhuman practice of deportation.

The director of the Gymnasium was deeply impressed. After the performance he expressed his interest for his school to get more strongly involved in developing a welcoming culture in Gransee.

„Before it was hard to to understand how asylum seekers feel, but now we have become aware that we can also help even with simple means. We hope that the city of Gransee will have more empathy for the asylum seekers and that also goes for us students. Talking with the asylum seeker here in our school was very helpful for us to understand that real people with real stories to tell need our help, for there there is no such thing as illegale people.“ (a girl student of the Strittmatter-Gymnasium, Gransee)

The female directors took care to depict the characters in a sensitive manner, showing their attemps to achieve a feeling for their new home. The spectators were able to get to find out more about the world in which these refugees live with some entertaining and humorous situations included.
